The event has played a historic role in Chinese tennis. Li Na, China’s most celebrated tennis icon, won her first WTA singles title here. Other Chinese stars, including Yan Zi, Zhang Shuai, Wang Qiang, Hsieh Su-wei, and Wang Xiyu, have also lifted trophies at the GZ Open. Chinese players have additionally secured nine doubles titles, making the tournament a proven “lucky ground” for homegrown talent. In 2019, American Sofia Kenin won the singles crown in Guangzhou before capturing the Australian Open title the following year—reinforcing the GZ Open’s reputation as a launchpad to Grand Slam success.
